The name "Eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", meaning "castor", as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. After continuously eating the leaves for nearly 30 days, the worm takes another 15-20 days to spin the cocoon. Once the moth leaves its home, the empty cocoons are collected, washed, dried and are ready for hand spinning. The very reason why they are also called Ahimsa/non- violent silk/Eri silk, as it does not require killing the moth to extract the fibre. Eri cocoons are spun like wool and the yarn is one of the most durable and strong fibres - giving a cooling effect in summers and warming in winters. Handspinning this yarn is nothing less of an art, as it requires years of practice, attention and patience.

These clusters are extensively involved in creating design collections with Eri where they are being dyed in naturally extracted colours such as turmeric, manjistha, tulsi leaves etc. These handcrafted textiles are thus contributing in creating a space where meaningful and organic lifestyle choices matter!
