The name "Eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", meaning "castor", as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. After continuously eating the leaves for nearly 30 days, the worm takes another 15-20 days to spin the cocoon. Once the moth leaves its home, the empty cocoons are collected, washed, dried, and ready for hand spinning. The very reason why they are also called Ahimsa/non-violent silk/Eri silk is as it does not require killing the moth to extract the fiber. Eri cocoons are spun like wool and the yarn is one of the most durable and strong fibers - giving a cooling effect in summers and warming in winters. Handspinning this yarn is nothing less of an art, as it requires years of practice, attention, and patience.

These clusters are extensively involved in creating design collections with Eri where they are dyed in naturally extracted colors such as turmeric, manjistha, tulsi leaves, etc. These handcrafted textiles thus contribute to creating a space where meaningful and organic lifestyle choices matter!
